When we get a paper cut in the skin, or experience a sunburn, we’re injuring the peripheral nerves of the body. Medical conditions like diabetes, HIV, cancer, or traumatic injury can damage these peripheral nerves and lead to bad burning pain, numbness, or paralysis. One of the pioneers in the field of nerve regeneration, Dr. Douglas Zochodne joins us. He’s a neurologist and neuroscientist from the Hotchkiss Brain Institute at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. His work is leading to ways of stimulating nerve re-growth in an effort to restore sensory and motor function, and ease pain.
